Every New Year we commit (and sometimes recommit) to achieving goals we’ve always wanted to accomplish. Getting in shape is the most common goal set for the New Year. Most of us get excited and join the nearest gym to start the New Year only to have a couple weeks go by and lose the initial motivation. Life starts to take over and our fitness goals are put on the back burner. Here are some tips to make this year’s resolution last and finally achieve your fitness goals.
#1 No Pain = No Pain!
You like doing fun things right? Exercise IS fun. Or to put another way, it takes 30 days to make a habit. Your goal for the first month is to do something 5 days a week and have fun doing it. Now you've started a Fitness Habit and you'll Love it!
#2 Distractions are Great!
Music is great. Personally, I love watching an episode of Top Gear on the treadmill. Get into the entertainment of your choice and before you know it, you have completed your workout!
#3 Write it down, or find a fitness app!
Put your goals down in writing to help you commit to them. You can put your goals in your phone, diary, calendar, etc. Today there are many interactive fitness programs for all of the modern technology that we use every day. Review them every day to remind you what you’re committing to and why you’re committing to it.
#4 Make a List of Activities you like to Do!
If you enjoy doing something, you’ll be more likely to do it. Common sense, Right? Well, apply this to your list of fitness activities to get your body moving. Ride a bike with the kids; go for a walk with the husband/wife. You won’t even notice that you are exercising.
#5 Grab a Workout Buddy!
Bring a friend that has similar fitness goals to hold each other accountable. Push each other to reach your goals and you will both be satisfied with the results. You could also join a class together. This could be less intimidating if it’s been awhile since your last time at the gym and these classes provide instruction on exercises. There are also tons of options available for classes outside a gym including running groups, cycling groups and boot camps.
#6 Be Consistent!
Even if you make it to the gym for only 15 minutes… Make time to go to the gym at least 3-5 times a week, every week. It takes 4-6 weeks to build a habit and this will go a long way to building a habit of going to the gym.
#7 Create a Healthy Lifestyle!
Remember that nothing worthwhile comes easy or quickly. This includes any fitness goal, so start off small and steadily progress every week until you hit your goals. Quick fixes are not only dangerous to your health, but are difficult to maintain and usually result in you losing all of your progress once you get off their plan.
#8 Get Involved in Local Fitness Events!
Not only is this another FUN way to meet your fitness goals, but a great way to socialize with like minded people in your community. See below for some fitness events scheduled in Austin this January.
#9 Keep Your Eye On The Prize!
Never forget why you have set out to be more fit. No matter what your after… the power of acquisition is a powerful tool of the mind.
#10 Have Fun!
Whatever it is you do to further your quest for fitness… HAVE FUN! You are much more likely to reach your goals while having a blast doing it!
Remember that getting started is half the battle. The other part is staying committed to your goal until you’ve achieved it and maintaining it afterwards. Remind yourself why you decided to commit to this goal whenever it gets tough. It is all about creating a health LIFEstyle; shortcuts never last.
